M-Pesa has made buying electronics online far more convenient than it used to be — no need to carry cash or wait for a bank transfer to clear. But that same convenience is exactly what fraudsters try to exploit. Here's how to protect yourself.
Only pay through official channels
Legitimate stores use Lipa na M-Pesa Paybill or Till numbers, or an integrated STK Push checkout on their website (the pop-up that asks you to enter your M-Pesa PIN directly on your phone). Be cautious of sellers who ask you to send money to a personal phone number instead of a registered business Till or Paybill — this is a common red flag.
Verify the business before you pay
A real business will have a physical location, a working customer care line, and reviews or a track record you can check. If a deal seems significantly cheaper than everywhere else for a "genuine" branded device, treat it with caution — it usually is exactly what it looks like.
Keep your M-Pesa PIN private, always
No legitimate seller will ever ask you to share your M-Pesa PIN, a one-time password, or reveal it over a phone call — not even "to confirm the transaction." STK Push only ever asks for your PIN on your own phone, never spoken aloud or typed elsewhere.
Save your M-Pesa confirmation message
Always keep the SMS confirmation as proof of payment until your order has been delivered and confirmed working. If a dispute arises, this message is your primary evidence.
Check the warranty and return policy first
Before paying, confirm in writing (WhatsApp or email) what the warranty covers and how returns work if a device arrives faulty. A seller who is vague or evasive about this is a warning sign.
At fimnet.shop, all electronics purchases are backed by our warranty policy and secure M-Pesa checkout — you can read more on our shipping and returns pages before you buy.
