Walk into any electronics shop in Nairobi and you'll be handed a spec sheet full of numbers — Core i5, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD — and very little explanation of what any of it means for your day-to-day work. Here's a simple way to think about it.
Start with what you'll actually do
A laptop for browsing, email, and document work needs far less power than one for video editing or software development. If you mostly use Word, Excel, WhatsApp Web, and a browser with a dozen tabs open, a Core i3/i5 with 8GB RAM is plenty. If you're editing video, running design software, or coding, look at Core i7 or Ryzen 7, and 16GB RAM minimum.
RAM matters more than most people think
RAM (memory) determines how many things you can comfortably run at once. 4GB is genuinely too little for modern Windows — you'll notice lag switching between apps. 8GB is a comfortable minimum today, and 16GB gives real breathing room if your budget allows it.
Choose SSD over HDD, every time
An SSD (solid-state drive) makes a bigger difference to everyday speed than almost any other spec — faster boot times, faster app loading, more reliable under Nairobi's heat and occasional bumpy matatu rides. A 256GB SSD will outperform a 1TB HDD for daily use. If you need more storage, an external hard drive or cloud storage covers the gap.
Battery life and build quality
If you'll be moving between home, the office, or client meetings with unreliable power, prioritise laptops rated for 6+ hours of real-world battery life, not just the marketed number. Check reviews for how they perform once the battery ages a year or two.
Business use? Think beyond the laptop
For business owners kitting out a small office, also budget for a UPS to protect against Kenya Power outages and surges, and consider whether a desktop or all-in-one PC might suit fixed workstations better than a laptop — often more power for less money if portability isn't a priority.
